Tank is built with privacy as a first principle. No accounts, no tracking, no ads. We collect almost nothing — and what we do collect stays on your phone.
What Tank uses your location for
Tank uses your approximate location only while the app is open to show stations near you on the map and calculate distances. It's not stored, it's not logged, and it doesn't leave your device.
You can also browse the map manually without granting location access — pick any postcode or address in the search bar.
What's stored on your device
Tank keeps a few preferences in iOS UserDefaults (standard iPhone settings storage). These never leave your phone:
- Your default fuel type (U91, U95, U98, E10, Diesel, Premium Diesel)
- Tank size and fuel efficiency for cost-to-fill and trip planning
- Saved Home and Work locations
- Favourite stations
- Notification preferences
- Display mode (c/L vs Tank-fill cost)
What Tank does NOT collect
- No name, email, or phone number
- No user accounts or logins
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No advertising identifiers
- No third-party trackers or cookies
- No background location
- No social-graph or contact-book access
Where fuel prices come from
Every price in Tank is sourced from an official government feed. Service stations are required by law to report price changes within 30 minutes (in most states). Tank reads those feeds directly — no scraping, no crowdsourcing, no guessing.
- NSW Transport for NSW — FuelCheck (CC BY-SA 3.0 AU)
- ACT and TAS — via NSW FuelCheck grouping
- Queensland Treasury — Fuel Price Reporting (CC BY 4.0)
- Victorian Government — FuelCheck (24-hour statutory delay)
- Western Australia — FuelWatch
- South Australia — Department for Energy and Mining
- Northern Territory — NT Government data feed
Third-party services
Tank uses Apple's MapKit to render the map. That's it. No third-party analytics. No advertising SDKs. No tracking pixels.
Data sharing
Tank doesn't share, sell, or transfer data to third parties. There's nothing to share — it isn't collected in the first place.
Notifications
If you opt in to push notifications (price-drop alerts on your favourites, or cycle alerts in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide), Apple's push service is used to deliver them. Tank tells Apple what to send; Apple delivers it to your device. No personal data is attached.
Children's privacy
Tank is rated 4+ and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new effective date. Since Tank collects almost nothing, meaningful changes are unlikely.
